Okey, it looks like it's a big, stinking NO for my application for becoming a member in
aific. I can live with that. Some of the "no" comments went over the requirement of polite concrit, though, judging the fic for its pairing and not for its quality. Most of them just commented on the "oddness" of the writing, asking if the fics were betaed (yes, they were), unintentionally catching me for being a non-native speaker.
But the thing? The thing is that one of the commenters remembered that my Adam/Danny fic had been ripped to shreds in the comments in ontd_ai's badfic post, and that my fic was the source of the "I have no problem with your gay" -thing. OMG LOL! I hadn't known that! I mean, how hilarious is that! I always liked that tag. (And I'm still standing behind that wording in the fic, by the way.)
So, my fic wasn't only Not Good Enough, So No Thanks, but actually So Bad We Have to Ridicule You. But I asked it myself when I applied, so everything is good.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:24 am (UTC)I cannot believe that first person perspective is not an automatic 'no.' There's really no excuse for it, IMHO. It's lazy and childish and third person limited is the exact same thing, but minus the "tell me how you spent your summer vacation" feeling. I tried giving concrit about that in a couple threads, and then gave the hell up. Quality fanfic =/= Kradam, and Kradam =/= quality fanfic. I wish that were the case, but it is not.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:48 am (UTC)dooo iiiiit! Although I think that the fic ridicule has pretty much calmed down in ontd_ai, maybe they reached the saturation point or something.
And yes, Kradam is the one pairing/fandom with the largest portion of non-quality fic for a long time. I think that only Backtreet Boys fic reached the same hight. And kradam_ai's message of "if you have nothing nice to say don't say nothing" really doesn't help.

Date: 2009-07-19 03:31 pm (UTC)My point is that I wouldn't take it as a criticism of your writing. I think it's a pretty amazing accomplishment to be able to write creatively in a foreign language.
Also, like I say, I don't follow ai, so I can't do beta for content, but I am always happy to do grammar/word choice type betaing in any fandom. If you ever want a native-speaker to run through something you've written, and you don't mind concrit, just send it to me. naotoalbah@gmail.com (note the extra h)

Date: 2009-07-19 03:53 pm (UTC)For the foreign thing, it's pretty frustrating that "good for a foreign" doesn't really cut it. I would never mention it in my author notes, for example, because that would be like I would be asking for going easy on me, or saying that the story sucks. It's actually pretty interesting that you could pick my stuff out in anon_lovefest; I'm totally blind for those nuances, obviously.

Date: 2009-07-19 04:29 pm (UTC)It can be fixed with an extra beta run-through, though, as long as you can recognize that there is an issue. For instance, I would disagree with the phrasing of "I have no problem with your gay." Either "I have no problem with your being gay," "I have no problem with your gaying it up," or "I have no problem with gays," would all be more common phraseology.

Date: 2009-07-20 08:19 am (UTC)While I agree that I wouldn't want to be 'good for a foreigner' either, I think having that in the notes might not be a bad thing if it's an issue. I'd rather people think I'm foreigner than them thinking I'm some kid who doesn't know how to use beta :/. (Although having native beta might fix the issue.)
