JLE #30 (Giffen-Jones-Robertson) begins with a dream sequence that’d disorient you whether you’d read Armageddon 2001 or not. In “Breakdowns Part 5,” Captain Atom was alive and well and being reinstated to the League, so you’d expect that to still be the case at the start of “Breakdowns Part 6.”

But if you had read A2001, you would’ve seen Captain Atom “dying” a hero and future Captain Atom as a mournful, crazed victim. You’d also have seen two other characters assassinated, one figuratively and the other literally, but let’s move on from that. )

The previous arc " Cirque du Sin " was the transition from Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo's brighter run, smoothed by the fantastic parts of that threat.

What the Cirque did in Blüdhaven led to reconstruction, set-up for some of writer Dan Watters' thoughts:

" As someone who moved from the UK to the US, American infrastructure fascinates me. The shapes of cities here can be entirely different- there's just so much more damn space.

" The psychogeography of a sprawled city is so different to a more European-style city, which I'd generally pigeonhole Gotham as- walkable, easily accessible via public transit, with people living stacked on top of each other.

" Cities where each stop of the day is a 45 minute drive away makes for a different way of living, and invites a different kind of story.. "

" It is wild to me to build infrastructure that is ostensibly to facilitate and improve human living, and to have so much of it inaccessible to the pedestrian. Engaging with your own town primarily through windshield glass.

" These are the things swirling around in my head as I consider what makes Blüdhaven different to Gotham. And I decide it means Nightwing needs a cool new car. "

Another axis on which Blüdhaven is worse than Gotham. )

Warning for a homophobic throwaway line from a villain, and some...controversial character development.

The heroes of the JLA and JLE are gathered in New York after the Bialya mission. While they mingle with some of their usual irreverent chatter, it’s more subdued than usual.

J’Onn and Catherine hope to get things back to normal--“as much as they can be, without Max.” But Cap nips “normal” in the bud as the JLE starts teleporting back to London.

He starts spraying his pits with WD-40 and speaking French in a Gambit voice. ‘‘Ah, oui, cherie, hon hon hon!’’ )

Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairings/Characters: Stiles Stilinski/Derek Hale
Rating: PG
Length: 12K for the first story; 35K for the 5 stories series
Creator Links: DiscontentedWinter on AO3
Theme: Arranged Marriage

Content Notes:

Canon-typical violence

Summary:

To honour a treaty with the people of a strange land, Derek Hale, prince of the kingdom of Triskelion, has to marry Stiles.

Reccer's Notes:

A beautifully lyric and almost mystical work about an arranged marriage between Prince Stiles and Prince Derek where they have never met before the wedding and do not speak each other's language. What could have been either slapstick or tragic turns beautiful in DiscontentedWinter's hands... she shows us the beauty in learning about others and how the power of belief can stop armies.

The additional stories expand the world-building and show how two very different peoples can learn to live together.

Here's another fun ADHD story. I bought a pair of pants that are a lovely jungle green over two years ago from Freddie's of Pinewood (no longer there; they were limited run) (sorta-splurge, because they're "slow fashion" + customs fee from England). They close with a button but not a hook, and I immediately ordered a hook to sew in them, but then I didn't get around to doing that for the last MORE THAN TWO YEARS because I never planned an occasion to wear them. (They aren't dressy occasion pants. They're just cotton twill.) Today I thought to myself, "I might as well sew it in, or I'll never be able to wear them once I decide to."

Then I looked in my sewing kit, my spare needle and thread and button case, the sewing table in the living room, and the little basket full of embroidery tools, which was all the places I could think of where it might be. But no luck. I can't find the hook&bar. I'll have to order another because there's not a sewing shop in town (you can buy mending materials like thread, patches, low quality needles etc including regular hooks and eyes and zippers at supermarkets and the Finnish equivalent of K-Mart, but the larger flat hook and bar that goes on waistbands is apparently less in demand).

I am planning a trip to the big mall with rancid vibes next week, because Wax wants more fun socks and you can't get those locally; but I'm afraid I'm unlikely to find one there either. The last time I ordered from an online shop that would carry them was less than a month ago, because I finally started knitting socks to give to Wax's family next winter! But of course I had no memory of the issue then.

This is obviously not just an ADHD tax, though; it's also hardly having left the house in that time (burnout, depression?) and putting these pants on a pedestal (what a distracting metaphor... pant pedestal) because I'm so jazzed to have found pants in such a great color. And feeling that I don't have any tops that are as good, though I now know what I want to knit to go with them (a striped zigzag or ripple tee something like this, with lavender and green and blue).

The artist best known for his unapologetically cheeky pin-up art style, Adam Hughes, needs little introduction to most comic fans.

However, today his wife, fellow artist Allison Sohn posted that Hughes had been diagnosed with Stage 3C colorectal cancer.

This is a treatable, and survivable, condition but there are never guarantees.

I know I speak for the Mods, and am sure I speak for all members of the scans_daily community in sending him all our best, and wishing him the best possible outcome in his upcoming fight against this most unpleasant of diseases.

The Global Guardians were only the third most popular “GG” in the JLI era, after Guy Gardner and General Glory. But they merited at least a little attention after all their buildup. Assistant editor Kevin Dooley slid into the writing role for these four stories with Andy Smith on pencils, though it’s hard to believe the same people wrote and drew all four of them. Even by JLI standards, they’re quite varied in tone.

Almost as much as Sumaan Harjavti’s skin and hair are from appearance to appearance. )

How to kill my interest in Absolute Robin's in one panel

I confess I've only been glancing at the Absolute Batman title, it's just.. not to my tastes. If you're enjoying it, then more power to you, but not for me.

However, me also being me, I was interested to see what they'd do with the concept of Robin.

So how does the latest issue introduce the concept? With one panel they poured cold water over me.

Oh no... not HIM )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Artemis II arrived safely back to Earth, though apparently Mission Contgrol chose not to all put on ape masks

The beloved internet meme "Neil Banging out the Tunes" celebrated it's 20th Anniversary

And speaking of rats doing improbable things (without the charm of the above) POTUS47 managed a remarkable week even by his usual, unbelieveably low, standards. Trying to save face when his chaotic Iran War went horrendously badly, to the extent he's now blockading a blockade that only exists because he set in motion the events which caused it in the first place. Milirary historians will be documenting this one for years.

Suffice it to say that when you manage to post an AI image so offensive that your own Christian Nationalist supporters come out on the side of the POPE in an argument (even momentarily), you HAVE to know you've buggered things up.

JLE Giffen-Jones-Robertson, JLA Giffen-DeMatteis-Wozniak.

Storytelling is as much about what you don’t include as what you do. Giffen and company were often inspired in terms of what they left out or minimized. This appealed to a smart audience who could fill in the blanks.

But sometimes you leave too many blanks. Sometimes you cross the line between making your reader an enthusiastic participant in the storyline and making them wonder why they’re doing all your work for you.
