  • I love FOB's "I Don't Care" video. Joe steals the show with his flasher ways! Andy is even worse actor than Pete! Pete tries to kiss Patrick and Patrick smiles genuinely and gives him a finger! I really need a gif of Patrick's and Joe's victory dance after they throw the balloons! Too bad that "somebody" released the version with the in-your-face Nokia product placement, Pete really blew his fuse about that.

  • My new little fandom bandom that could is The Cab. Which is pretty funny since I never truly got into, say, My Chemical Romance. But here I am, thinking about what kind of gay porn stars The Cab kids would be in my never-to-be-written pornstar-AU. (Singer would do twink-get-a-gang-bang -stuff, Ian would make independent artsy films that are really just gay porn, Marshal would make daddy-movies, with and without leather, Johnson would have a prostitute background and would do semi-illegal stuff like bloodplay and fake snuff films and Cash would do kinks. Of course.)

  • Spent a lovely evening shopping with [livejournal.com profile] sua_lay and [livejournal.com profile] tvillingar. I found a new costume jewelry store, the first stop in Finland from a German chain store, named Bijou Brigitte. Their selection was only a little better than I was used to, but they catered all from pre-teens to adults and their way of presenting their stuff was like every magpie's dream. Really, placing the jewelry loosely to see-through glass tables instead of hanging them in straight order to the wall displays? Made me buy more. Seriously.

  • On Thursday we had fun-and-games at work when one of our subcontractors treated us with activities and a dinner in country. We had all fun activities like hatchet-throwing (really!), but some of the activities were so far (You want me to climb up that hill that is actually an old slalom hill?!) that I had to drop out, which was shitty because 1) we were having a group competition so I had to leave my group in trouble, and 2) one of the activities that I missed was driving four-wheeled cross-country motorcycles, which I would have very much liked to try, and 3) it was awkward to the subcontractor.

The main thing is that I have to seriously think of downgrading myself to the class of the sick ones and the fat ones who just simply don't participate. And that would be just shitty.

  • DJ AM and Travis Barker are both going to make it. The estimation of their burns was given to the media by non-professionals, and their conditions were not as life-threatening as what was first thought. Adam Goldstein, (DJ AM) has been now released from the burn unit to general care :)

I've been really trying to avoid The Cab fandom, because they are SO young. Now you've made me think about them all as pornstars, and I'm going to see them play tonight. That's going to be distracting.

OH LOL!! I got you all weirded out!

It's easy for me to read them because I live a half a world away, without a real possibility to see them in person for years. Anyway, almost all of the fics about them is about them with each other, and not a screwy managers or older club owners demanding favors in sight. Not that I would be able to not read them if there would be any...

That's my problem, too - I wouldn't be able to not read those kinds of stories, and I really like their music, so I try to just avoid that whole corner of bandom.

Even them with each other feels a little weird, considering I'm literally old enough to be their mother.

It's a shame you can't see them live, but I guess it does help with the "fourth wall' problem. Are you going to be able to see Fall Out Boy on the European tour?

I could be old enough to be their mother too, if I would have been a really, really young teen mother ;)

Sadly, no FOB for me since the closest cities are London and the one in Germany, and I don't have the money to spare for that, living in Finland. I'm waiting a concert in either Stockholm, Sweden, Helsinki, Finland, or Tallinn, Estonia, and then I will be there! My Chem had a concert in Helsinki, so I live in hope.

Whoa. Your workplace uses four-wheeled cross-country motorcycles as a team-bonding activity? What kind of office job do you do, anyway? :-P The most extreme bonding thing I've ever done is a ropes course. Heh.

I work as a media-analyst in a communications agency, so it's a pretty posh company. Some of the perks are nice; This trip was paid by our sub-contractor that is a printing house. Before my time, the company itself had arranged bonding trips with luxuries like helicopter rides and such, but now we have downgraded to just really fine christmas parties ;)

    Just curious.

Why did you never manage to get into My Chemical Romance? Was it the music or the guys or the stories or something else?

I dunno. A little over a year ago I hadn't been a music fan for a while. In fic, it was SGA all the time. Someone in my f-list had a campaigh to get people into MCR, and I read some of the fics, but I just couldn't get myself emotionally involved enough. I like the "I'm not okay" video as much as the rest of people, but I didn't find a pairing that would personally mean something special to me. And then, for some reason, read a Pete/Mikey one, which lead to Pete/Patrick one, and Bang! I was so hooked! I read, and watched, and listened everything FOB, Patrick/Pete is my otp, and I'm fan-girling them both music-vise and fic-vise.

On hindsight, maybe the MCR dudes were too... equal to each other for me. In fics, I couldn't find enough stuff to give me the emotional feedback and investment that I crave, and with music, I never went deeper than the singles. Fan-vise, I guess being a MCR fan wouldn't have been identity-building for me, but being a FOB fan is something I like to identify with and I like myself more as a FOB fan.

About music: FOB is the only band for like, ever, that I have actually searched, found, listened and loved all of their 80+ songs. With Panic, MCR, TAI, The Cab, Gym Class and so on, I newer felt (at least not yet) the need to dig up their whole discographies.

Sorry, put this in the wrong place!

I haven't really listened to popular music for the last 20 years or so and when I was in popslash I didn't listen very much to the music at all. Nick Carter's solo album now and then, but that was pretty much it. And then [livejournal.com profile] nafs' long Nick Carter/Patrick crossover fic lured me into bandslash and I started reading some Pete/Patrick and listen a bit to FOB. It never really felt like my thing though and then I fell into MCR somehow and started listening to their music and was completely hooked. Lately I've become just as hooked on The Used's music even though I'm not very interested in them as fic characters. I haven't loved an artist/group like this since I was in my teens :-)

I THINK the reason FOB and even more so Panic, never hooked me is that the group dynamics are a bit too much like those in popslash to me. I feel a little "been there, done that" whenever I read FOB or Panic stories. MCR on the other hand has a very different group dynamic and they have a very different vibe - rougher and less polished in a way. And of course the music itself is very different. Much more like the hard, fast punk and postpunk I listened to in the late 70s and early 80s.

I read that Patrick/Nick, too, at the point when I was jumping from MCR to FOB. That was very good fic, even when I didn't have a clear picture of who this Patrick character was supposed to be ;)

Now I can say that I "Learned to love" boy band music because of the popslash. I still (very seldom) listen to their songs for nostalgic reasons, but that's pretty much it. At least at the moment I can say that I will continue to listen FOB even if and when I continue with my fic interests. I'm so old that I don't think that my tastes in fic dynamics change that much in this point. Like, SGA's Sheppard/McKay = FOB's Pete/Patrick, yes? Maybe if my life situation changes much sometime.

the only The Used song that I have is "Paralyzed", which I love like crazy. Feel free to drop me song names that you think that I would like :)

I suspect [livejournal.com profile] nafs's story is the cause of many former popslashers's slide into bandslash :-)

    SGA's Sheppard/McKay = FOB's Pete/Patrick

I was never into SGA (I think I spent all my Stargate interest on SG1 back in the day :-) but from what I've heard that analogy makes total sense and if you use it for popslash too it makes even more sense why Pete/Patrick never managed to hook me: far too much like Chris/Lance, my favourite popslash pairing.

I haven't thought much about my changing tastes in fic dynamics, I think I must think about it some more and see if I can spot any trends in the way I've moved from fandom to fandom over the years. I don't think it's got much to do with age though, since I'm much older than you. Or possibly the age correlation is individual.

Hmmmm... Paralyzed is from their latest album "Lies For The Liars" (2007) and if you like that I'm pretty sure you'll also like Hospital and With Me Tonight from the same album. You might also try Light With A Sharpened Edge and Lunacy Fringe from "In Love And Death" (2004) and The Taste Of Ink and Blue And Yellow from "The Used" (2002).
