First day of Finncon, the one and (almost) only science fiction and anime convention in Finland, is now behind. Saw some excellent and some a little less excellent panels and discussions. My own panel about fan fiction (subtitled "99% of everything is crap") with [livejournal.com profile] dlasta and [livejournal.com profile] mitzi007 went pretty well. As always, my questions run out in the middle of the panel (since they were so redundant that I had to skip several) and I had to just wing it. But I don't think that anyone noticed ;) We ended to a conclusion that fan fic can't be something that just evolves from point A to point B, point B hopefully being good fic, but it is in fan fiction's nature to gather more A-point fics all the time. So it would be impossible for fan fic even exist without the lousy stuff.

I managed to throw my money to the sellers only 40 euros worth, meaning mostly shonen ai manga. There is only one store in Finland that sells them so it was like "What you see is what you get, and if you liked it, come back next year!" The devils sold mostly of them packed in shrink wrap, so no peeking of the art work! I just had to read the back cover and hope that they would tell something about the manga truthfully. So basically I wanted a school fic but without any teacher-student relationships. Dunno what I bought, eventually, but they took visa! Something good, hopefully?

as there is an anime convention at the same time, the place was swarmed by people in cosplay outfits. I have never seen so many cosplayers in one place. Also, a new fashion in Finland are the doll "companions", meaning basically that teens and adults drag these very pretty and detailed dolls around. Frankly, I think it's pretty creepy. I think that they are beautiful and such, but why drag around a prop that psychologically regress the owner to a fice year old? when I collected My Little Ponies, I sometimes combed them and primped them, but it was not like I would have carried one with me at all times! There was even a lecture concernign the dolls, and I would have liked to see it to learn what it was all about, but I had to be somewhere else at the same time. Maybe next year, then.

Ok, well I read all of your post and probably only understood 10% of it, LOL. But that's ok ;)

That post could use some context ;) Anyway, one of the unwritten rules of these conventions is the use of t-shirts as messages. Like, people wear shirts from old, ancient conventions to show how old and experienced they are on science fiction conventions, or wear a shirt about what is their cuttent fancy. Today I'm wearing a Nsync Celebration tour T-shirt. It will be a Nsync RPS fic joke that probably maybe one person will understand ;)

You may congratulate/blame yourself that your panel drove iSani and me to write our first joint fics on the way home. For me, those were even my first attempts ever. Now we just need some advice on where and how to publish them under our cunning undercover alias.

*Pats herself on the back* there will never be enough fic in the world. :) About the publishing: just pick out a free-for-all general archive or a Yahoo group that focuses/allows your fandom, and throw it out there. Wait to be flamed/praised/ignored. If there isn't a general fic archive about your fandom, try some of the "rare" fandoms"-archives" (I could look some up in bette time) Anyway, if you will write more/people will love you, than you just post them in yout lj and "people come to you". Of cource, in this case I would recommend to concider a separate fic lj..

Don't pat yourself too hard yet. Even though, despite our production method not being the most conventional, the results weren't actually very bad. We first went through our shared fandoms, finally deciding to pick the most popular ones, LotR and SW. Then both chose a character for each, without knowing the other's choices. The writing took place on the train home, proceeding by the notebooks being switched every two or so sentences. I've already signed us up at Fanfiction.net under a cunning joint alias. Now we just need advice on determining the ratings, writing disclaimers etc. For that, we probably should move onto mail or something.

As a side effect, I also ended up tentatively reading some fics last night. I got off to a good start with some HP/Tetris crossover action... :D

Our? Oh no, that was the first one I read, not what we wrote. Our stories aren't yet out, I only just sent you some questions about the process.

How was the manga? Still waiting on your shelves?

X2 about the doll companions. Weird. Check out the Lolita article on hesari (sunday), for more weirdness.

Was it you or Mitzi007 who wanted the Modesty Blaise fic link?
Anyhoo, it's in my journal. Just in case.:D

Thanks for the modesty link! I read the lolita article, and yep, weird. It's one thing to love everything cute, and another to dress up to look like a five year old with a chinese frill skirt. And, a hobby that completely lies on 1)consuming, and 2)looks, doesn't get that many points in my book.
