Retro sex education
Jun. 19th, 2007 06:16 pmI have been reading The Joy of Sex, originally published in 1972. Pretty interesting and even hilarious reading with their suggestions of Group sex is fun, yay!, and Even when you want to teach to your children that sex is natural, please don't keep them in the same room while performing. The hyper realistic illustrations with armpit hairs an all is also fun.
The age of the book kinda shines through, though. The first edition didn't have anything about Aids or HIV and they hastily slapped together something for the second edition, and it shows. Now the book suggest of refraining altogether from anal sex and sex during mesntruation, even with condom, because that could give you Aids. They also suggest that you wouldn't swap partners during an Aids epidemic. Yes, because Aids is like a flu, it comes and goes like an epidemic. But anyway, it was fun to read, a mix of sex ed, position guide, sex history and couples therapy. Definitely worth to pick up if you see it in a used books store for a few bucks.

Date: 2007-06-19 04:27 pm (UTC)--even though the edition I remember was a crumbling paperback with a severely retro font and a picture of a naked woman's back. It looked sort of like an ad for moisturizer. ;)

Date: 2007-06-19 04:37 pm (UTC)My "Joy of Sex" is actually a Finnish translation called "Rakasta hellästi". (Literally, either Love Tender or Make Love Tender") The 70s' "sexy" undervear and such are hilarious, but it's not like sex would have changed in the last forty years.
