My domain is down again, which I noticed when my lj's header picture disappeared. Also the whole service provider's site is down again, too. It's really a time to change web hosting provider. Damn. I have heard that it can be tricky if you want to continue with the same domain name.
Went to see "The Queen" with friends last night. It tells a story of how england reacted when Princess Diana dies ten years ago. I can heartily recommend it to everyone. It's good, it has great acting, it mixes fact and fiction, real footage and created one, seamlessly. It probably presents the story more straight-lined that it probably really was, but that's movie making for you.
I've been updating myself with the latest tv, and I got into thinking about how magic works in Supernatural.
The question about religion got answered an episode ago. I think it was a great view considering the subject of the whole series and the fact that most Americans do believe in at least some kind of higher power So, Sam believes in higher powers (but it's not like he would be asking help from above) and Dean.. might believe. Or maybe not. I liked Dean's angsty view of world, where demons and spirits were just chaotically, randomly there, without any greater plan. I see one flaw in Dean's thinking, though: his view of things would have been clear if not only spirits but demons, too, would have been born from the evil in people. So, no hell, no heaven, just chaotic evil. But, in the series, they believe in hell, which would lead to Satan and some kind of "organized" evil. From which there isn't a long jump to a concept of organized good, too.
Anyhow. Back to the magic. I got thinking about this because in my evil little head, I see a fic where Dean needs some extra tricks to keep up with Superpover!Sam. (Think "Hellblazer", the comic not the movie) But the problem would be that they won't use magic, period. And then I got to thinking, why the hell not? Was there anywhere in the episodes implied that they would categorically refuse from using magic? Or was this just something that I picked from somewhere? (Just like when I thought that in Supernatural reality, dead would always stay dead, and then I noticed that I had picked it up from Harry Potter...)
So, in Supernatural, magic works, Voodoo works, the rock salt thing works, making deals with demons works. the christian latin demon exorsism works. So why they don't use it more? wouldn't it give them the extra something to fight with?
There could be at least two reasons for not using magic; the need of inherited skills or the lure of black magic. The first would be easy: either you can do magic or you can't, or that something simple like protective spells and rites would work on all people but the hard stuff would require the right genetic material. Then using higher magic wouldnt be something that one could just pick up, no matter how hard you would want it.
The other possibility would be the concept of black, neutral of white magic. Or, as I think it, there would be no white magic, only neutral, which would be the easy stuff, and black. Then using all higher magic would be inheritedly dark and they would want to avoid using it as long as possible.
There could be other reasons, too. Maybe magic would require years of studying and practice. Or they just prefer guns since they have been thought to do so. Or there is no higher magic in Supernatural. Or using locator spells and sensing the presence of evil wouldn't be as cool.
The question about higher magic in supernatural remain unanswered so far, and maybe that is better. Still, anyone want so write me that Gifted!Sam and Sorcerer!Dean fic?

Date: 2007-02-11 05:40 pm (UTC)I think it's probably partly this reason and partly the show runners not wanting to deal in high magic, y'know? I'm thinking it's like Smallville, where they don't want the tights and flashy superpowers despite it *being a superhero show*. In the same way, SPN is kind of "demon hunting for the Regular Guy", or something like that. Heh!

Date: 2007-02-11 06:20 pm (UTC)Maybe the screenwriters will save the high magic to some big season ending exravaganzas? I would just like to know if Dean could use high magic if he would need to.
