Ha. There was a "heart braking" story in [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt about David Beckham calling for a girl dying of cancer. Like this:

Her beautiful 19-year-old has cancer. Three years ago, a mole on her collarbone that doctors kept telling her was nothing turned out to be melanoma. By the time the truth was discovered, it had spread. Soon her body was fighting a losing battle against an enemy with no soul.

Heartbreak doesn't begin to describe the resulting anguish to those who love her. Particularly since doctors have told the family that, without some kind of miracle, time is now being measured in days rather than weeks or months.

Irked by the celebrity-calling-to-a-fan-story (because what good would it make?) and the Harlequin-style writing of the story, and also knowing the racy ridicule-all ways of Ohnotheydidnt, I, without checking the other comments first, commented OH BOO HOO.

Only after that I noticed that all the other comments before me were actually concerned and understanding. When has the comments in ohnotheydidnt ever been concerned and understanding? Open mouth, insert foot. Anyway, I could have of course deleted my comment, but whatever. If people will blow a fuse, then let them.

Uh. Yeah. The whole celebrities-visiting/calling-fans phenomenon has always seemed pretty bizarre to me. If I was days away from dying, I don't think I would give a damn if I got a phonecall from David Bowie, Jesus and Buddha on the same day. Unless they had worked out a miracle cure for me, of course.

Then again, I guess there are people to whom a visit from their idol would mean a lot. I just always get this feeling that most celebs are doing stuff like that to make themselves feel better / look better in publicity.
