Last week I got a call from a journalist. Would I allow myself to be interviewed about fan fiction? Okay, I said. When she called a day later, I found out that it was a personal interview, about fan fiction but also about me as a fiction writer (What writer? I write like a one fic per year) But she *also* had an idea: Would I write a example story for the paper? Okay, I said. (What I should have said was: 1)Are you really sure that you want a story from a person who has no merit whatsoever as a writer? and 2)You will get paid, I won't. Write your own damn article.)
Anyway. Then it came to the question of what to write, since it had to be something that the Finns would know about. She suggested Salatut elämät, a local soap opera, and James Bond. Naah, I said, Haven't seen it, didn't want to write about it. She was already scraping the bottom of the barrel when I suggested Finnish Idol judges. She was instantly thrilled and we continued the interview part.
And the point of the story is this: Almost accidentally, I got a fan fiction story published in the Finnish official media! (a collaboration of three mid-sized newspapers that no-one important reads, but whatever )And not only a fan fiction story, but a real people fic, about celebrities that are well known in here, and it's even a slash fic! (well, if you squint) I think that the journalist was so in a hurry that she didn't think twice about what was she actually offering to the print.
I don't believe that anything will come out of it (like the production company or the celebs mentioned blowing a fuse), but it could. So this is a first case of this kind and even when nothing happens, it's a still a statement in the media; You can continue doing this and nothing will probably happen.
Anyway, today the paper got out (you can find it in here, for example, but you can't read the article without paying). I haven't seen it yet since I don't read those papers, but she promised to send me one. For that, I will release my fic that I wrote for it. I swear that it will be that last fic ever that I will write in Finnish!
( Paha veri (WARNING!! In Finnish) )
It feels somehow shamefull to write in Finnish and especially about characters that you could theoretically meet in the street. Let's not do this again.
