Have nothing to do?

Then go read The Cassandra Claire Plagiarism Debacle and Heidi's Homages or, "I Can't Believe It's Not Plagiarism!" in the Bad Penny community

Go! Shoo!

How come HP fandom always gathers the worst tin hats?

heidi and cassie are more bitches than tinhats i think. i don't believe for a moment that they didn't know what they were doing. (although WOW and HOLY SHIT and stuff.)

i've really only ever seen "tinhats" used to referred to True Believers of one kind or another, usually RPS.

Really? I connect "tin hats" to HP because [livejournal.com profile] tvillingar and [livejournal.com profile] sua_lay use the term when talking about HP fans.

Yes, Cassie and Heidi knew all the time what they were doing, thus both deceiving their readers and fans and breaking the copyright law in a way that should have been punished. but *their* fans, I believe, could be called tin hats.

We do? I connect tinhats to RPS, too but perhaps we've been talking about those cuckoo shippers who believe their favourite pairing is canon (like the loonie who was v. v. angry because JKR had clearly mislead the poor readers into believing she'd reveal Harry/Hermione as the couple matched in heaven and then crashed the whole thing in book 6)?

Ooh, so the tin hats are the people who have the bright idea to reveal the real people slash for the *real people*?

Euw, that too! Tinhats are usually those sad fan(girl)s who believe their ship, whatever it is, is real. Can't remember who coined the name first but it was first connected to Domlijah fangirls who thought the boys were communicating with them through messageboards and such, revealing their love is true though the PR Devils wanted to suppress them... it's all coming back to me now. Did you ever read dl_anon in journalfen? That's where the whole story is.

So there's, like, historical evidence of tinhattery from previous decades? Dude, it makes me feel so... culturally connected. Or something ;) "See, even our grandmothers did it!"

they're probably just using it to mean crazy, but it comes from the people who actually make hats out of tin foil because they believe they can hear radio transmissions from aliens directly in their brains that way. (the FBI actually gets a fair number of calls from tinfoil people a year.) so that's why the 'true believer' thing. i don't know if it actually originated in the dom&elijah lotr rps tinhats or not but that was the first time i saw it.

I think I need a "Get out of my fandom, you make it look even worse that it already is" icon.

I'm the first to admit that if wank could be turned to electricity HP fandom could solve half the world's energy problem right away. And if I may be a bit wanky by myself, only thing that makes Cassie Claire special is that she started when there weren't as many good writers in HP as today. The few fics that I have read from her have been amusingly written but uneven and terribly, horribly OOC.

Well, that would be because she quoted and plagiated from so many sources! ;)
