All you SGA readers: You must have read those kid fics, right? But before those, there were the parenting fics. And, like in all good little fan fics, their kids were brilliant and the parents were great at parenting.
Well, I amused myself with thinking what kind of parent a canon Rodney really would be. And he would
I bet that Rodney would be the worst parent ever. Or, not ever, because he would love his kids unconditionally, but I’m sure that his parenting skills would suck. He would be like those workaholics who would say, sure I look at what you made, just wait a minute, and the kid would be still waiting an hour later to get some attention promised. And Rodney would get frustrated and stop reading books to his kid because they were so stupid and simple.
He wouldn’t answer to his kid’s questions more than once, because why ask the same question again and again? The idea of the kid getting reassurance about the stability of language and objects by asking the same questions would go completely over his head. He would try to negotiate with a kid too young to understand other than unchanging yes or no. He would praise the kid for drawing a perfect circle but not for eating his plate clean and without dropping the sippy cup.
And, most importantly, in the tricky situations Rodney would definitely balk from the decicion makers role and hide behind other people. And there would be other people helping him, even so many that the kid wouldn’t learn to trust Rodney as the final authoritative figure to relay on.
And one point, his kid would be difficult on purpose, and Rodney would be cranky, too, and without thinking he would ask the kid what, are you stupid?, and then John would drag him behind a corner and slap him. Hard. Because John doesn’t want the kid to grow up like him.
And John would have this cheesy fantasy about playing house with Rodney, and John would seriously wonder when he got so lame. And then he would bribe Teyla to get as old and ugly babysitter as possible, because he thinks he knows about how these things go.
