Highly toxic Aflatoxine has been found in "Nutra Nuggets" pet foods. This food has killed several dogs in the States. If you have purchased this food in Finland, go to the Musti & Mirri's page to check out if you have purchased the contaminated food. Sorry, I couldn't find a similar page in English, since the manufacturer's page is way too flashy (i.e. it contains flash) for me to enter it.

I feed my cat with *just that same food*, but thankfully my bag was from a earlier patch. Guess who will never buy that food again?

You must have gotten quite a shock! I cringe at imagining how I would have reacted. *shudder* I heard about this some days ago but thought it only concerned the US, I had no idea it was sold here in Europe too. I'm so relieved I'm feeding Lancecat on Royal Canin.

It really wasn't fun to dig the bag for the expiration date to find out if this would be it.

What happened to the high quality control in animal foods? I wouldn't be surprised if there would be something missing in the foods from time to time, but to accidentally add toxins in them? I'm baffled.

Aflatoxin is a substance secreted by certain common (mold) fungus that can appear in basically any plant based products, most often contaminating nuts, spices and cereals. It is actively monitored but still it can appear in food products, both animal and human. So it's certainly not added, accidentally or otherwise. :)

But I wonder the same thing - what happened to the controlled quality of animal foods?

I would sue if my dog died of something that was advertised as healthy!

I wonder if they have to change their packaging while trying to get rid of the public stink...
