This and that
Oct. 16th, 2005 07:41 pm- Yesterday was the stag party for a friend who is getting married the next saturday. Fun times, including "the StagPartyCon", good company, good food, Mega!raclette, stiff drinks, one guest (unintentionally) dressed like a prostitute, a dessert aptly named "the 8th deadly sin" and a pinata shaped like a goat. Yes, a goat. Two drinks and I was so wasted (low carb makes anyone a light weight when it comes to drinking) that I decided to leave a bit early, but all'n'all, I had a really good time.
- Speaking of weddings.. What the hell I'm going to wear?!
- Apple renewed it's movie trailer site and now you need a Quicktime 7.0 to watch anything. Can't upgrade my Quicktime since I'd have to upgrade my software first, and I can't do that because I haven't got enough memory to do that! So bye bye for trailers. That iMac mini is looking better and better every day.
- I seem to have started growing a second pair of wisdom teeth. How freaky is that?

Date: 2005-10-17 06:56 pm (UTC)And as for the wisdom teeth, it's not so bad. I don't fear dentists at all and I have a high tolerance for pain. I have even been trilled with only a partial numbing. the time when I started to yell, the dentist wouldn't want to believe me in the grounds of that if I would have felt that, I should have started to yell much sooner! I was like, "I'm not a person to yell because of little things!" ;)

Date: 2005-10-18 08:58 am (UTC)Actually I have two main problem with english. One, it's damn slow to think (and write). After my return to work I'm more used to use english again, but it's still slow. Reason two, without any modesty, I'm quite virtuous with finnish language. It's the language in my blood and when I use it, I don't need to think it. With english it's like walking with simultaneous thinking process "left foot, right foot, watch that stone, turne gently to left, left foot, right foot".
And then there is reason three. I read articles in newspaper about forgotten cultures and minor languages in Russia or China which fight for their survival. But what is happening with finnish? Yes, we read more than ever, but if you allow little provocation, less educated people are those that use finnish and more educated want to use (and read) more and more english. Language is losing it's best users. Those who could be most creative and would use also the finest qualities of the language. Most talented people in science and technology have more or less already lost finnish, they even say that it's impossible (or "too expensive etc.") to produce scientific information in finnish. My guess is that it's only matter of time when the cultural elite follows.
I have stopped complaining about the bad translations of the fantasy books after I started buying some english versions. If only peole who read fantasy in finnish will soon be under 15, who can't read english well enough, then only fantasy we get in finnish will be published for kids. Kids who read anything with dragons and don't care the quality of the translation.
That is why I use finnish in my own blogs. I don't have blog-reading foreign friends like some of you. And that is why I buy my Robin Hobb, George R.R. Martin and J.K.Rowling in finnish. They are translated stories but that is how people got their stories for decades, even before books. So that is fine by me. And my kids may read all thos books earlier.
So this is my own little crusade. I do not want to blame anybody or anything. Everyone have their aboslute liberty to enjoy and produce culture any way they want.
There are many errors and typos in this text, I think. But that how it is if I try to express strong emotions with foreign language.
