First pic of my twin sister's ([livejournal.com profile] twindouble's) kid:

She has her father's eyes and her mother's lips. They haven't decided yet the kid's name. Knowing them, it could be anything ;)

I think she looks a lot like her dad. : )
She sure is cute, although I am usually not very fond of babies. So that is a very positive comment from me. ; )

I bet that her name can't be more weird than what one friend of a friend of mine is planning for her son. I can't remember if I already told people about this in my blog, but they would like to name their offspring Muikku or Tatti. Among other "good" suggestions. Ahem....

Muikku! Tatti!! AHAHA!! Oh the poor child!

Me and Twin discussed about her name and I was all "That sounds like a inuite name! What, are you native americans?" and "That sounds like the names that the parents just made up to be unique!" Anyway, I'm sure it will be something pretty ;)

I am sure that nimilautakunta won't accept names like Muikku or Tatti. Good for the baby! But on the other hand very peculiar names are sometimes okay with the registrator. No logic there at all.

When will the name be published? I mean Twindouble's daughter.

Sano muikku, hehheh! But the board has accepted odd names before, like Mango for a boy, so I wouldn't count on their sensibility.

If I ever have children, I'll want to give them names that are pronounceable in Finnish and other languages. I've never liked my first name and I've grown to dislike it even more since I started travelling. It's a bloody hindering hassle abroad.

Mango?! Wtf? I know tha tthere is one bimbo, but that person changed his name to bimbo voluntarily when he was an adult. Mango, Voi Kiesus.

The problem is (or so I've found out on the basis of my own experience) that
sometimes it's hard to figure out what names are difficult to pronounce and what are not.
Kirsi is impossible everywhere. While working in the UK I immediately became Kirsty and had to live with that. Earlier when I was at the language course I tried to be clever and use my second name Marita. But that was even more impossible than Kirsi. They couldn't say Marita in any recognizable way. I thought they might have tried saying it like Maria or Rita or something like that. But no.

Go figure.

Mm-hm. I'm always Eino in the UK to people who've only seen my name written. When they hear it, they hear it as Iona. Which is a perfectly good Scottish name, and an anagram of my actual name to boot, but still...

Pretty much anywhere else, I'm thought to be a guy, before people see me.

The name will be published when we decide what it is. Probably within a week or so.

A spitting image of her dad! We'll see, whose height she'll inherit. ;) She might have a very promising career as a model.

Well, she is in the tall side of the height curve even now. But like me and Twindouble say, Mieluummin majakka kuin perävaunu

A cute baby, I have to say! :-) I just hope they aren't going to name her Wolferina Stromina though, since one in this country is quite enough ;-)

No Stormina this time. Hm, I wonder wha the name board would say about Teyla?

She's a cutie!

And, um, please forgive my ignorance - what's a name board? Someone has to approve what she gets named?

Yes, we Finns have a name board. It's supposed to take care that people name their kids properly. No Rainbows, Bananas or Flowerpots for us! So, every time parents want to name their child with a name that haven't been used before it has to be checked by the bord. It used to "okay" only Finnish sounding names, like Markku, Mikko, Petra, Marjatta, Päivi, etc., but nowadays it's more free and they have aprowed names like "Ridge" or "Samantha". In Finland there is also a couple of Xenas, Zorros and Frodos... And one Tarzan ;)

Actually it's not that simple. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the process goes this way (I tried to find some info about this naming policy a few weeks ago when I suspected that Aure would give us some trouble being quite a rare name):

An ordinary employee or clerk at the magistrate decides whether or not s/he accepts the application for the name of the baby. If s/he decides that the name is against the law, then parents can take the case to the special name board. Then the board handles the case and gives its answer. I don't know if you can complain about their decision to anywhere or not.

But if the clerk thinks the name is okay, it's official and final. Not matter if it's Zorro, Frodo or Grieytwlsghfdgk.

That is quite an unfair system, because everything depends on who takes care of your application and how s/he interprets the law.
That's the reason why some very odd names have been accepted. Somewhere in Finland there is a really openminded magistrate employee....

[profile] userprobably knows most about these naming things. She collects strange names that have been accepted by either the clerk or the name board and has a lot of info about the issue as a whole.

Huh. I'm slightly flabbergasted. *laugh* My office mate and I have often proposed that there be a committee to prevent people from naming their children stupid things (some of the defendant names we see are just appalling. Their children are even worse), but I had no idea one actually existed somewhere.

Huh.

I've been told that the French would have select the name from a strict, official list - no choice about it.

Hmm. that would be a bit like naming Hurricanes then, wouldn't it?

"You're baby #3 today, that makes you Carl. Baby #4, you're Donna. It's a boy? I don't care! Donna is next on the list!"

*smirk* Not that way - they have a list where the parents can choose from. They are not named in a specific order :-)

Actually, there is a rumor that there is supposed to be many Ridges because of the popularity of the Bold and Beautiful. However, according to Population Records Centre, there is only three, and one of them was born in the 1960's... :-)

Okei, kuinka nopeasti kerukan poiston saa.
