Nothing kills the mood like a surprise attack of a warning-less mpreg rape, death fic. WTF? She didn't think that this would require warning? (Although, as XX is raped, has a baby, then dies was the whole plot of the fic, the warnings would have kinda given it away..)

By the way, is there some consensus in these mpreg fics, why and how male pregnany is possible? Nothing kills my mood like a pregnant man, no explanations given. And high levels Human Growth Hormone tell one is pregnant? What is this writer, like 13 years old? Or perhaps it is the common physiological explanation for mpreg, the baby grows somewhere in hypothalamus (just wondering how it got there after male rape)... *lol*

Sorry, just not my cuppa coffee. But then again, I find most spells in Harry Potter fics believable, so maybe I'm not the best person to rant... :D

Sometimes if the fandom is appropriate it can be explained with magic or alien tech. If not, then I suppose it takes a lot of suspension of disbelief...

I find mpreg exceedingly silly. What little I have read there is seldom any biological reasoning. They just get pregnant because they are in luuurve and when people are in luuurve they get babies. Yeah. And it's always the fandom woobie who gets pregnant. (Poor Ianto is currently populating the Earth in Torchwood fandom for all his might.)

I have read some good mpreg parodies (mainly in SGA) and back in my HP days one genuinely good one where Draco made himself through Dark magic sort of intersexed to get pregnant and make sure his family line continues.

human growth hormone, heh heh. Usually it's estrogen in the fics, but I don't know if that is that much better if we are seeking realistical espressions.

Anyway, mpregs are a genre that relies hevily on the suspension of disbelief. Just throw it in the same pile with gender switches, regression to cute five-year-olds and turning-into-animals, and you will do just fine. Personally I like it as a genre, where as I don't like "always-been-a-girl" gender switches or fairy tale AU's.

Try hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) and we should be on the right track... ;)

Well, this kind of disbelief is the kind I just cannot suspend. I could maybe handle the others mentioned but not real world "science fiction" without science. My bad. :)

In SW slash poor Obi-Wan was quite often pregnant. But I can't remember the details, because they were often not very good fics even if there weren't any pregancy involved. So I didn't read them twice if I even managed to finish the whole fic.
I only remember one fairly good (the author couple did other very good fics), but it didn't even try (as far as I recall) to explain how hte pregnancy had happened. Maybe that was the best choice. Not to even try to throw in some detailed and strange pseudo science or something like that. Obi just suddenly became pregnant, much to the surprise to everyone (male pregnancy wasn't ordinary thing in that that universe) had a baby tummy and then gave birth with c-section. A least they didn't write a "natural" birth from some strange new orifice that had appeared into his body. ; )

The fic was perhaps so good in my mind, becuse it concentrated on the time after the birth and how Obi and Qui managed to handle parenthood in those strange circumstances. Being that they were both baby (and later teenage)girl's biological parents. How it was different from gay couple adopting a child etc.
If the fic had concentrated only on the pregnancy, it probably wouldn't have been very good. But it was just a small part in the beginning.

I don't never remember reading a SW fic where some other male charachter was pregnant, but then again I haven't read them enough for a long while. There must be other male SW-"mommies" than Obi.

But as a whole it's not very much my piece of cake either. I don't suffer from the lack of science like you do (who would have guessed : ), but mpregs just don't interest me very much. No matter who is pregnant and who is the daddy or what is the fandom.
