Russian Parliament accepted last Wednesday a law, that will limit foreign ownerships in Russian companies that are listed as critical to the country’s security and infrastructure. Foreign companies wishing to raise their ownerships to over 50% would need a special permission from a administrative commission set to this purpose. The list of strategic business sectors was changed several times and now it consists of sectors like energy, nuclear technology, air transport, space technology and radio- and telecommunication.
But what is interesting is that in the last meeting, internet operating was pulled from the list. An opposition had previously stated their fear that the law would be used to limit the freedom of speech in the net.
Personally, I’m thinking that when it comes to limiting the freedom of speech in the net, the Russians really don’t need any foreign owners to do so…
