Mar. 17th, 2007 08:04 amIn Finland there has been a law change made that requires all inseminations done with a sperm and eggs from registered donators. You know, the "The child has the right to know his/her biological parents"-thing. And guess what? Three people has registered as donators. *Three*, in the whole country. This means the end of 99% of all inseminations done with any other than the couples own eggs and sperm.
People were supporting this law basically because they wanted to prevent single women and women couples from having chilren and effectively ended up with the Christian Right's view of the insemination allowed only for married straight couples and even then with their own cells. I guess that Estonia will have a new extended brand of baby making tourism.
On principle, I wouldn't have anything against donating eggs with my name attched with them. It's not like I would be somehow legally responsible for the baby born. The thing is that new laws can be made in the future. What if from fifteen years of now there would be a wave of puritanism going on and the kids would have the right to make their biological parents legally responsible? "Hello, this kid's sosial parent died and now we are suing you for child support and inheritance rights!" Who would take that risk?
The Government literally threw the baby away with the bathwater, ensuring with their "best fot the interest of the child"-law that there wouldn't be any children.
