Well, if you want to look at the bright side, at least they gave you proper feedback rather than the standard "Thanks but no thanks" note. :/ (And they *did* give you compliments as well as criticism.) Reworking the paper into a "popular" book sounds like a good idea. Maybe you can even use some of the criticism you got to improve the text while you're re-writing.
